Days of Heaven Quick Hit
Terrance Malick's second feature film previews the pacing & sweeping images of his later work & clearly stood as a marker of a great filmmaker. It's the simple story of early 20th century drifters, masquerading as brother (Richard Gere)& sister (Brook Adams), who work on a wheat farm. When the dying farmer falls in love with Adams' Abby it seems like they drifters have found a home, albeit separated. What makes Malick's film so engrossing is the time he takes to photograph images of the landscape, the animals & the workers in such painterly detail, never shortcutting for the sake of dialogue or story. Cinematographer Nestor Almendros, won an Academy Award for his stunning work.
